Scar Tissue

It wasn't until fairly recently that Kurt shared with me that he has a reoccurring nightmare.
About once a month he dreams that he's back at his first carbon fiber job. That something went sideways with Brothers Composites and he was forced to go back to the beginning. He wakes up sweating and alarmed.
He shared that story while we were with Shane, one of his business partners, and Shane's wife Abby. Swiftly and brilliantly, Abby referred to this as scar tissue. Our brains revisiting something that caused us pain. A build-up from a prior 'injury'. Reminders of the past and what we worked hard to move beyond, but still hurts to revisit. In this case, the scar tissue presented itself in the form of a fear.

We cannot dismiss the fact there was a beginning to Kurt's career. The catalyst, let's say, that began the trajectory to be a business owner. It's not that it was a bad job, or that he didn't like his bosses. He learned a lot, both good and bad, so it came with lessons. Kurt certainly doesn't desire going back to being someone else's employee, and Brothers Composites is still in it's early days. A three and half year old business is still a fledgling, even with much success already behind them.
Our minds work in mysterious ways. Dreams that haunt us aren't random. In this case, it's likely Kurt's subconscious, poking and prodding. Worries that aren't always at the forefront of his mind, popping up like a jack-in-the-box, giving his heart a little zing. It's scar tissue that remains, there to nudge him and remind him that everything the team is doing is not for nothing. BC now has 7 additional employees. I know the owners all worry about ensuring they are able to provide work for these young men, so they can care for themselves and their households.
**Reminder, 2 of those employees are our grown children, so that layer of stress is amplified even further for Kurt.
Fear is not always bad thing though! It can keep you on your toes. It can drive you to conquer something. It can keep you safe. I think this nightmare, although unpleasant, is a jarring reminder to not be complacent. To continue to strive to be better, to push and to grow. To be aware of the good and potentially, the bad choices that can be made.
Each of us has scar tissue and should use it as a reminder of where we've been and where we want to go.
Thank you, Abby, for your thoughtful insight to this. You were clearly my inspiration for telling this part of the story.
I guess thanks too to Kurt, for even sharing, LOL...love ya!
